Search Ohio County Court Dockets

An Ohio County court docket records the acts, filings, and hearing settings in a West Virginia case. To search the Ohio County court docket, first identify whether the matter belongs to Circuit, Family, Magistrate, or Wheeling Municipal Court. Each court has its own access route and clerk. Public records may be found through a state search, confirmed by phone, or inspected through the office that keeps the file. A sound Ohio County docket search uses the online result as a lead, then checks the originating clerk when a date, status, or official copy matters.

Ohio County Has Two State Portals

WVPASS is the public document path for Circuit Court. Registration is free, and it covers public documents dating from July 1, 1999. Searching costs nothing, though viewing or downloading runs $0.25 per page plus a processing charge. Anything you buy stays in account history for 30 days. There are no certified copies, bulk downloads, or notice alerts from WVPASS.

Magistrate Record Search plays a different role. It needs no account and charges nothing. It takes a first name, last name, or case number after a CAPTCHA. Results can show filing date, charge, disposition, and document-list information. But the list stops at 30 records, and the documents themselves never arrive through that search. Ohio County Magistrate Court supplies copies and validates what you find. Both tools are statewide, yet each answers a different record question.

Inside an Ohio County Court Docket

Think of an Ohio County court docket as a chronology. It is not the whole case file. It names the case, the court, the parties, and the filing date. The charge or claim, the events, the hearing settings, and the disposition appear too. A line saying an order was entered only points to a document. The full order does not always display. WVPASS may hand you a public Circuit document. The Magistrate search tends to send you to the local clerk for the paper itself.

Case numberThe court's file key; use the exact letters, digits, and dashes shown.
Case styleThe caption or party names used by the court.
EntryA dated filing, notice, order, payment event, or other recorded act.
SettingA hearing type with its date, time, judge, and room when published.
DispositionThe recorded outcome or status, read with later entries.
Document listAn inventory that may point to papers not available in the search.

Four layers, in other words: a result, a docket line, a filed paper, and a certified copy. Only the clerk can certify an Ohio County court record.

Ohio County Docket Terms in Context

Registers use short terms to save space, and those terms can mislead. A setting is a scheduled court event. A continuance moves it. A disposition records how a matter ended or changed status, and a transfer means the record may continue in another court. Read the whole sequence before you draw any conclusion.

Filing history
The ordered list of submissions and processing events.
Register of actions
Another name for the case docket or event chronology.
Clerk review
An e-filing status, not a ruling by a judge.
Processed
A filing received by the court, not proof the case was decided.
FTA
Failure to appear, an event that can lead to later court action.

West Virginia E-Filing adds one more wrinkle. It stamps each electronic filing or order with a reference code. That code is not the case number, so don't use it for the broader Ohio County case search.

Courts That Keep Dockets in Ohio County

Four streams of court records run through Ohio County. The West Virginia Circuit Court of Ohio County is the general-jurisdiction trial court, sitting in the First Judicial Circuit alongside Brooke and Hancock Counties. Ohio County Family Court belongs to the First Family Court Circuit. Magistrate Court takes lower-level criminal work, preliminary felony examinations, civil disputes up to $10,000, and other limited matters. Wheeling Municipal Court handles city Police and Building Code Enforcement citations. Each stream keeps its own clerk.

A First Circuit directory can list officials from nearby counties. Verify that any address, judge, or setting actually belongs to Ohio County before you rely on it.

Ohio County Magistrate Results Need a Clerk

Treat the Ohio County Magistrate search as a locator, not an online document room. You can run it from a phone, computer, library, or a public terminal in a magistrate clerk's office. Use the exact case number when you have it. A name query that hits the 30-result maximum is not a complete list. Narrow it or call the clerk. The official Ohio County Magistrate Court page names Gerald O. Ames, Jr. as clerk. It places the office at 26 Fifteenth Street, Wheeling, with 304-234-3709.

Ohio County Magistrate Court docket office and clerk information

That office fills the gap. It supplies court documents and checks a result whenever the statewide disclaimer or an unclear status raises doubt.

How to Find Ohio County Court Dates

A current Ohio County court date can surface in several places. The newest docket entry counts. So does a filed notice, a court calendar, or a direct clerk confirmation. Always check the latest entry, since a later continuance can quietly replace the first setting. WVPASS promises no alerts. The Circuit Clerk's linked calendar is not a stable public search. The safe fallback is whichever office holds the file. That means the Circuit Clerk, Magistrate Clerk, Family Court office, or Wheeling Municipal Court.

For a closer look, the Ohio County Court Dates page breaks it down. One caution: never treat a recurring session time as a case-specific notice. Wheeling holds criminal and traffic sessions on alternating Wednesdays. Still, the defendant's own notice, docket, and clerk confirmation control.

Ohio County's Four Record Addresses

Several Ohio County record offices sit within blocks of each other in Wheeling. Yet each serves a different docket. Circuit records live in the City/County Building at 1500 Chapline Street. The file room sits on the fourth floor. Family Court occupies the courthouse annex at 51 16th Street. Magistrate Court sits at 26 Fifteenth Street. Federal cases go to the Northern District courthouse at 1125 Chapline Street. The official Ohio County Circuit Court page maps the local judges and the Circuit structure.

For a copy of any docket page, go to the clerk or the file room. A judge's chambers does not handle public records, even in the same building.

Public Access to Court Dockets

Court rules, record-specific statutes, and the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act govern access to Ohio County court records. Much of what exists is open. Still, the access is not absolute. Sealed filings, juvenile material, and much of a domestic-relations file may be withheld, and a document missing online can simply be old, undigitized, or briefly unavailable.

Key rules:

W.Va. Code § 51-4-2 says court records and papers are open subject to law and clerks furnish copies.

W.Va. Code § 29B-1-3 governs specific requests, inspection, copying, costs, and the five-day response framework.

W.Va. Code § 49-5-101 protects juvenile records, subject to stated exceptions.

W.Va. Code § 48-1-303 generally protects domestic-relations pleadings and exhibits while treating orders differently.

Name the court, the case number, the document, the approximate filing date, and the copy type. That detail helps the clerk. FOIA covers records that already exist, and it never forces a clerk to build a custom database or report.

If an Ohio County Filing Is Missing

Start by checking the right portal. A Magistrate matter will not appear as a Circuit document in WVPASS. A Wheeling citation may remain with Municipal Court. Check spelling, the full case number, and the date range. A public Circuit document can fall outside WVPASS coverage. A new filing may still be moving through clerk review. If the case appears but a paper does not, contact the clerk. The clerk can say whether the item is sealed or confidential. Some papers are not scanned or sit only at the counter. An empty search result does not mean no Ohio County court docket exists. Juvenile cases stay out of WVPASS. Domestic-relations pleadings can remain confidential even when a resulting order is public.

Best next step: give the clerk the exact court and case number, then ask whether the record may be inspected or copied.

Ohio County Docket Counts Need Care

Annual statistics add context. But they are not a case search. The final 2024 report listed 308 Ohio Circuit criminal matters. It also listed 456 civil matters and 194 juvenile matters. The 2025 displayed components total 329 criminal, 551 civil, and 218 juvenile matters. Those rows are reporting categories, not counts of convictions, parties, or current open files.

3082024 Circuit criminal total
4562024 Circuit civil total
1942024 Circuit juvenile total

The state Judiciary dashboard publishes preliminary case counts, and the annual reports lock in final figures for each year. But neither tool ties any number to a single Ohio County case in the court docket.

Docket Records at the Clerk's Office

The Ohio County Circuit Clerk keeps the record for Circuit and Family Court files. The office also handles the fees. The office receives filings, keeps orders and judgments, and manages costs and bonds. It also issues plain or certified copies. Online search works well for discovery. The file room is the official route, though, when a record must be certified. It serves when a portal will not display it. The Circuit Clerk's official page shows the fourth-floor office, its hours, and a separate file-room contact.

Clerk names change. The county and state directories have listed different names, and the county posted an appointment notice in August 2026. Use the office title, and call before relying on a name.

Ohio County Copy Fees and Proof

Two fee systems apply here. WVPASS bills public users $0.25 per document page, plus a processing fee. Those downloads are not certified copies. For something certified, the clerk handles it in person. Under W.Va. Code § 59-1-11, the Circuit Clerk charges $1 per page for any copy that leaves the office or gets used elsewhere, and actual postage or express costs may be added on top.

The Ohio County Clerk Is Different

The Ohio County Clerk and the Circuit Clerk share a building. They do not share the same job. The County Clerk maintains deeds, leases, releases, vital records, and probate or fiduciary files. That office oversees fiduciary and probate work here. Ohio County says it is the only West Virginia county to do so. Those records are not part of the Circuit or Family docket. Send a civil, criminal, juvenile, or Family Court request to the Circuit Clerk. Send a state Magistrate request to the Magistrate Clerk. A probate or fiduciary question may belong with the Ohio County Clerk in Room 205. Routing matters. A building address alone does not identify the custodian. Note: Confirm the record family first. Then pay a fee or mail a request to an office at 1500 Chapline Street.

Ohio County Dockets Moved Online

Ohio County court access changed in stages. County Commission minutes from 2021 described a move from older software to the West Virginia Supreme Court's e-filing environment. Magistrate Case Search arrived statewide in 2024. WVPASS began public service in March 2025. A statewide court-data dashboard followed in July 2026. These systems are not interchangeable. West Virginia E-Filing and Filing History serve registered filing users. WVPASS serves the public Circuit document search. Magistrate Record Search handles lower-court lookup, and the dashboard summarizes trends. The Ohio County clerk offices remain the source for copies, certification, and gaps, which is why an old notice or saved link may not match the current Ohio County docket path.

Ohio County Court Dockets by City

Ohio County has five incorporated places in the official 2020 Census ranking. Wheeling publishes a detailed Municipal Court page and payment route. Bethlehem publishes a recurring court rhythm but not a case search. West Liberty, Triadelphia, and Valley Grove require town or village contact. That is how to identify any municipal custodian. State matters from all five places route by type to a court. The type decides whether it goes to Ohio County Magistrate, Circuit, or Family Court. The official Census incorporated-place table supplies the population order.

Map and Directions to the Ohio County City/County Building

Circuit and Family Court files are kept at the Ohio County City/County Building, 1500 Chapline Street in downtown Wheeling, a facility dedicated in 1960 that also houses city offices. The Circuit Clerk's file room is on the fourth floor, alongside Circuit Judge chambers in Rooms 506 and 503 and the County Clerk in Room 205; Family Court sits in a separate annex at 51 16th Street, and Magistrate Court is at 26 Fifteenth Street, so confirm which building a case needs.
